Good Morning on this beautiful marathon morning. My name is Kim Hodges and I serve on the Board of Deacons. When I received the phone call a few years ago to be a Deacon at Rutgers, I quickly responded, “what is a Deacon and what does it require?” I gave it some thought and wholeheartedly said, “I’d love to do it!” and I totally meant it and I was excited about it.

Although I always wish I had time to do more as a Deacon, the things I am able to do always leave me with a warm feeling in my heart about my Rutgers family.

Being a Deacon offers opportunities like:

Hosting Sunday Coffee Hour (I’m hosting today and I have Nutter Butters and Oreos)
Assisting with Thursday Night Meals
Preparing & serving communion
Preparing flowers during coffee hour
Sending cards & visiting those in need
Assisting with many Rutgers functions
Volunteering with our Homeless Shelter

You may wonder why am I telling you all this? Well, I’m sharing this with you because you don’t have to be a DEACON to do any of these activities I just mentioned. As part of the Rutgers family, we are all Deacons or brothers or sisters to our extended family.

So, if you find yourself with some free time on a Thursday around 5:30pm, call Ulla Farmer and spend an hour or so helping her prepare dinner for the movie night.

Check out the back of the bulletin…your Deacons are listed there every week…ask one of us if you can help out with coffee hour some Sunday.

Take the time to send a card to someone on the prayer list.

And give up a night to volunteer for the Homeless Shelter (I’m soliciting myself on that one as well).

I LOVE being a Deacon, and giving to Rutgers doesn’t always have to be about money…Give yourself…It is the BEST gift you can give.

Thanks and God Bless!
